Committed to Promoting Child and Human Rights
The Centre will make a valuable contribution to the National Law Institute University, Bhopal's social and academic footprint by addressing four main areas of activities. It will generate in-depth research reports on issues that are in the public eye such as child begging, trafficking, domestic child labour, and human rights abuses. In parallel, it will construct specialized training modules to enhance the capacity of actors operating in child rights and human rights, to have legal expertise as well as practical resources. The Centre also aims to establish robust policy suggestions to enable improved enforcement of protection systems. Lastly, it foresees introducing community-based rehabilitation programs specifically designed for street children and trafficked children that will reintegrate them into society with dignity.

Prof. (Dr.) S. Surya Prakash

Prof (Dr). S. Surya Prakash has been serving as Vice Chancellor of National Law Institute University, Bhopal from 01-June-2023. Prior to this, he served as Vice Chancellor of Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, Visakhapatnam and as Founder Vice Chancellor of Maharastra National Law University, Aurangabad (Maharastra) and Professor of Law at NLIU, Bhopal. He has more than 30 years’ experience in academics and worked as Lecturer, Principal, DNR College of Law, Bhimavaram, AP, Faculty Member of NUJS, Kolkata and Principal, Law College, Nanded, Maharashtra before joining in NLIU, Bhopal. He obtained his B.L. from Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, A.P. and Master of Law from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, A.P. with first class in the area of Labour and industrial Law. He was also awarded the University Prize’ V.N.Deekshitulu Award” for securing highest marks in the branch of Labour laws. Later he was awarded Ph.D. in law from Berhampur University, Odisha.
Prof. Surya Prakash is a prolific writer and wrote on several contemporary issues. His first work on ‘Bonded Labour and Social Justice’ was published by Deep and Deep Publishers, New Delhi(1990) and fore worded by Hon’ble Justice M. Jagannadha Rao, Judge, High Court of A.P. later became Judge, Supreme Court and Chairman, Law commission of India. He is also the author of ‘Turning Point’ The Story of a Law Teacher (2009) the biography of Prof. N.R.Madhava Menon, which also the story of National Law school movement in India. He has edited two books on ‘Critical Issues on International Commercial Arbitration'(2012) and ‘Perspectives on Mediation'(2012). His recent publications include ‘Remember, Martyrs of Indian Freedom Struggle’(2021) fore worded by Sri M.Venkaiah Naidu, Vice-President of India (published on the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav), ‘Constitution and Composite Culture’ (2023), ‘A Practical Guide to Legal Methods and Legal Research’(2023) with Prof. A. Aruna Sri Lakshmi, all are published by DSNLU, Visakhapatnam, A.P.

Prof. (Dr.) Uday Pratap Singh, a respected faculty member with specialization in Human Rights, has recently taken on the role of Faculty-in-Charge of the Centre for the Child and Human Rights for the current academic year. With a longstanding association with our institution spanning nearly a decade, he has played a vital role in enriching both the academic and professional journeys of our students. Known for his deep knowledge of Human Rights and unwavering commitment to teaching, Prof. (Dr.) Uday Pratap Singh is widely admired for his mentorship and academic excellence. We are excited to embark on this new chapter under his guidance and are grateful for the valuable insights and support he brings to the team.
OUR OBJECTIVES
Enhancing child protection systems through capacity building, research, and advocacy
CCHR's most fundamental goals are to carry out in-depth empirical and doctrinal studies of legislations such as the Juvenile Justice Act, POCSO Act, and Protection of Human Rights Act. The centre would seek to engage with important institutions like DWCD, UNICEF, the judiciary, and the police to recommend legislative and policy changes of substance. The cell emphasizes capacity development by facilitating training and sensitisation for stakeholders in child welfare and justice. The thrust area is the examination of compensation schemes for survivors of child sexual abuse, including standardization and availability of such compensation. The centre also deals with sophisticated matters such as false implications and recovery of compensation with a view to achieving proper balancing between protection of survivors' rights and abuse prevention. It intends to prepare detailed judicial guidelines on compensation, conduct impact studies on the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act and Mid-Day Meal Schemes, and encourage legal aid and advocacy for children and juveniles.
